Joanna visits with Kristin Hildabrand, Warren County Horticulture Agent who talks about selecting hummingbird feeders. When getting ready for hummingbird season, it is important to pick out the best feeder that will hold up throughout the season. Several garden centers and nurseries carry a variety of different feeders, which makes the decision challenging for some homeowners. Don’t get overwhelmed though. Here are a few pointers to consider when selecting the best hummingbird feeder:
• Select a feeder that will be easy to clean. Glass feeders tend to be easier to keep clean and sanitize than the plastic feeders.
• In their natural environment, hummingbirds flutter in the air when visiting flowers. Some feeders offer a place for hummers to rest and perch while drinking nectar from the feeder.
• If having trouble with ants, add an ant moat to the top of the feeder. They are inexpensive and help to keep the ants from feeding on the nectar solution.
