USSSA Silat Technique of the Week #7 - Spiral Chop Throw

USSSA Silat Technique of the Week #7 - Spiral Chop Throw Practice your human pretzel making skills with Technique of the Week #7 Spiral Chop Throw

Comment below to share your thoughts about this technique and/or how sport translates to street and vice versa.

Technical Notes:
While setup varies depending on situation, Spiral Chop Throw begins with insertion of your hand/arm into the crease of your opponent's elbow. From there, thread your same hand back under the tricep of your opponent's arm. Use your other arm to cross over to tangle up your opponent and push down for the takedown.

In the street example, the aim is to create a lock first against the elbow. The second cross locks up the opponent's far arm and it then frees up the initiating hand for a follow-up strike. If executed with full destructive intent, the cross serves both as a punch to the face as well as the intercepting element.

In sport silat, grasping and locking are illegal. To modify for competition, the spiral chop serves more as a way to entangle and pass without locking. To keep the hands from grabbing, Coach Daniel keeps them inverted solely for placement to initiate the throwing motion. If the palms were turned toward the opponent, judges may rule this illegal even if there was no grabbing.
