Tips about making autistic kid comfortable with new things or in a new environment

Tips about making autistic kid comfortable with new things or in a new environment This was the third time Andre played in a water park this year. He still didn't like it. He whined on the way to the park, especially when he saw the park he got very very nervous, and told us to turn back. It because the slash of the water. That's two much sensory input for him, also there were many kid playing around him. He always feel stressful when kids are near by him.

He was good with the water park last year. Probably because he hasn't played in the water park for a while. He usually has some hard time when doing transition or switching to new things, like from shorts to pants, socks to no socks. It will go away after keeping doing for a few times or a few days.

We used one trick that almost always working on him. Mix a little thing that he likes or feels comfortable with new things he doesn't like or new environment he got nervous/uncomfortable.

So this time we used the water gun. It successfully distracted him and calmed him down. See how he interact with the mom and even looking at other kids. He did whine and asked to leave after this video, but we can tell he is much more comfortable, and on the way to get use to it.

This trick may or may not work for you kid, as each autistic kid is different, but worth a try.

Andre was diagnosed with autism and low muscle tone in March 2018 when he was 2.5 years old. He made tremendous progress so far!
