Model answer.

Q. The arrival of Buddhism is a revolution against the existing materialistic prospects but also a boon to existing materialistic society.

The fundamental root of the arrival of Buddhism is based on the existing disappointment in society caused by the deep class distinction. Opening a simple path to relieve from human misery without any complex philosophical ideas, it garnered the support of common people.

The Buddhist code bears some ideas which are quite revolutionary in the sense that they were far ahead of time in terms of showing concerns against the vibrant materialistic society. Some of them are-

A. The early Buddhist ideology prohibited accepting gold ,silver from others.

B. They favoured to live in isolation away from the humdrum of city life.

C. Their way of living in equal foot without craving for money, gold portrays a kind of community life evidenced in primitive tribal society.

D.The Buddhist code also shows disappointment towards private property, luxurious living which reflect a lifestyle of continence and solacing.

E.The Buddhist code permitted almost all classes to enter Sangha irrespective of class or creed.

F. The denial of the existence of God and soul was a revolutionary aspect against the existing Varna divided society based on the supremacy of God.

G. Propagating non violence , Buddhist code supported agricultural causes against the Vedic rituals of sacrifices.

H. Permitting women to Sangha, Buddhism ushered an era of gender equality which is far ahead of time.

Thus, the Buddhist code seems to raise voice against the existing social aspects of that time which were based on class, rituals and other materialistic prospects.

But despite such revolutionary attempts, the Buddhist code can't be totally termed as revolutionary because some of its ethical conducts or rules also supported the consolidation of existing social orders. They can be interpreted as follows-

A. Prohibiting debtors to enter into Sangha, Buddhist code helped to grow the moneylenders.

B. Prohibiting slaves to enter into Sangha, Buddhist code strengthened the class structure in society.

C. Leading a sedentary life being depended on alms is against the practical aspects of life.

D. They neither vehemently condemned the existing class structure nor raised active voice against private property.

E. The development of Buddhism aided by rich merchants further bolsters the materialistic prospect of Buddhism.

F. The support of non violence to animals also indirectly helped to grow a wealthy class with cattle stock.

Though some of the features of Buddhist code supported the existing materialistic society directly or indirectly but it is undeniable that most of the features of the Buddhist code were enough to initiate a liberal, democratic and intellectual aura of that time.
