Hi guys, welcome to Daye’s Global Careers. Today’s guest is Geza. You have worked in China for 3 years so far. Right? Right. So, how did you find the jobs in Suzhou and Shanghai?

[How to finds jobs in China]

I used the websites echinacities.com. I did LinkedIn which I think is good. I got my part-time job for Baidu just by that. Once you get in China and you learn some Chinese, there are some websites such as 51jobs.com and there is an app called LiePin(猎聘) which can use also. Those are the ways I used to search for jobs.

[How was the hiring process]

For my job in the HNA Group which at the time was Fortune 500, that’s more of a rigorous one so we had about three rounds of interviews. We had a phone interview and then if you pass that one, then you come into the office and when you come into the office they had two rounds of group interviews. There are three interviewers and then the seven of us around the table and we are working together and they wanna see how you interact how to solve a problem who participates, who doesn’t you know. That was all in English as well.

Our question was if an airplane fell to the ground in Brazil. They give you a list of 20 items what are the top 5 items you gonna choose. And out of the seven people, you have to choose one person that’s a leader and then the rest of them are contributing to the ideas. So they wanna see how you interact within a group.

They don’t want someone that’s overpowering like you are saying all these and you don’t let other people talk and trying to be like too bossy. They wanna see that you are calm and collected but also state an opinion that you really wanna own.

So how many people would get selected?

Out of those seven, we only had three selected. Ah OK. So for that one, we got the results right away. Because it was an interview and then you do another one right after and two rounds of group interviews. Just general questions about your experience and why should we choose you. And this whole interview process was all in English.

There were three people in the interview and there were three interviewees. Three interviewees and three interviewers. Yep.

At that time, that interview was actually in Chinese. So the first ones were all in English but they wanted to see my level. They asked very simple questions.

[Any interesting interview questions]

They even asked things at that time. They have asked me if had a girlfriend? That was one question that kinds of shocked me a little bit. How does this relevant to my job?

[When was the most challenging moment]

Hmm most challenging moment, I think especially the second year when I got to Shanghai because I got into a big company, big corporation. I didn’t know anything about the corporate world. All I knew was teaching. Difficult for me to get at first was the difference in work culture. It’s different from the Chinese work culture and American work culture. In America, it’s easy to go directly and talk to your boss if there’s an issue or a problem. A lot of times in China, you have to kind of step back and you have to go through this person this person and then eventually the news will get to the boss.

And also not be too confrontational because that’s one thing that’s in the US, it’s easy to do. You can just be very direct and confrontational but in China, you have to kind of slow down there’s the concept of face in China to show respect and things like that. It was kind of a culture clash from what I used to.

[What are the important skills to become a brand specialist]

Important skills to become a brand specialist. Creativity and you need a lot of teamwork, cooperation with other people because you are gonna be doing that every day in branding. You cannot do everything by yourself. You need someone to do this If you have an event, I guess you have to work together and make sure that you can. That’s some of my tips.

Ok so as a brand specialist, what do you think about this brand? Oh, I think this is great, Daye’s Global Careers right here. I think this is fantastic. I might wanna take one of these to home.
