Virtual reality can provide valuable insights into workers’ behaviour during emergency evacuations and may improve safety awareness, new research has shown. Researchers from the University of Nottingham, funded by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), developed a multisensory virtual environment (MS VE) to see how workers respond in evacuation scenarios and if sensory stimuli, such as smell, heat and touch, can help to improve safety outcomes.
In this video Drs Glyn Lawson and Tess Roper from the University of Nottingham discuss the research findings and how VR can help to improve safety outcomes. They also discuss how this technology is increasingly affordable to industry.
