John Henry Newman was born in February 1801, at the end of the Age of Enlightenment and the beginning of the Romantic Era. He grew up in a pius Anglican household.

The eldest son of a banker in London, he was a great reader at school, especially of modern philosophy. At the age of 15, his last year at school, he converted to Evangelical Calvinism.
