2 Provision of Rural Access infrastructure

2 Provision of Rural Access infrastructure Designing rural roads in much of Africa, South America and South-East Asia is not as straightforward as it is to build in countries with large existing road networks. With large existing road networks comes, among other things, tried and tested specifications, best practices and legal standards. Across Sub-Saharan Africa for example, these standards have not been tailored to the local circumstances or do not yet exist. One of the main deliverables of the Research for Community Access Partnership (ReCAP) is to create the various manuals reflecting national conditions and policy, bespoke for each country, taking into account local variables including institutional set-ups, appropriate construction methods and how materials and aggregates behave in the varying climates. This short film focuses on lessons learned and current challenges in the provision of rural road infrastructure.

This video was produced by Transaid in the framework of the ReCAP project on Retaining Rural Access Knowledge from Senior Experts (KMN2131A) and is the second in a series of nine videos addressing key issues in rural access provision, preservation and sustainable transport services.
