Gateway of India is a historical monument built in the early 20th century in the city of Mumbai (earlier name Bombay), in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is located on the waterfront at an angle, at Apollo Bunder, Colaba, opposite the TajMahal Palace and overlooks the Arabian Sea. Today, the monument is synonymous with Mumbai city, and due to its history and architecture, Gateway Of India is among its prime tourist attractions and tourist destinations. Access to the gateway was restricted after people congregated at its premises following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, in which the Taj Hotel and other locations in its vicinity were targeted. Alibaug and Elephanta Caves can easily be reached from the Gateway of India.
