Three Women in Architecture and the Paths They Have Chosen

Three Women in Architecture and the Paths They Have Chosen May 18, 2019 Panel discussion with Moderator Daniela Deutsch and Panelists Jennifer Landau, Kristine Munn, and Laura Shinn

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage and the progress women have made in those one hundred years to contribute their special talents to society, FSDA thought it would be a good time to talk about women in architecture. There are many choices open in diverse fields of architecture to best use women’s special talents and collaborative skills. Today, we are fortunate to have three women who will tell us more about the paths they have chosen. Moderator Daniela Deutsch, an assistant professor at NewSchool, will lead the discussion.

Daniela Deutsch represents the global perspective that NewSchool hopes to bring to all of its programs. Educated in Darmstadt, Germany, Daniela is multi-lingual, and both her architecture and teaching careers have flourished in both Germany and the U.S. Daniela has worked as a designer, held exhibitions in Germany and San Diego, and conducted research on a scientific approach to design strategies.
In the U.S., Daniela has worked with Westfield, LLC Design, Carrier Johnson + Culture, and Balinger AE. She is a principal with Exitecture Archlab, Inc. in Germany. Her teaching experience is as diverse as her professional efforts.
Daniela has had a successful teaching career in both Germany and at multiple universities in the United States, including an online studio at Boston Architectural College. At NewSchool, Daniela currently serves as 4th-year level coordinator, spearheading the academic part of an ambitious integrated and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Jennifer Landau (M. Arch.) has 15 years of professional experience ranging across projects in both the private and public sectors – including master plans, hospitality projects, condominiums, educational facilities, mixed-use complexes, and single-family residences. With a blend of highly technical training in Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA, and a background in Scenic Design at the La Jolla Playhouse, Jennifer’s designs are influenced by texture and light, simple lines, and the cognitive effects of space on the soul.
During her early career, Jennifer worked in large firms focusing on high-rises, plus hospitality and educational facilities. She has been an adjunct professor and thesis advisor at New School of Architecture and Woodbury University. In 2012, she started her own firm focusing on residential architecture. In 2015, she joined forces with one of her best friends, architect Corinne Lloyd Moody, to found L2Architects – a small boutique firm focusing on residential, multi-family, and small commercial projects. Jennifer’s passion lies in the residential world, and she has primarily devoted her focus to that sector.
Jennifer lives in a 1939 bungalow in North Park with her husband, twin girls, and a kitty.

Kristine Munn (Ph.D.) earned her doctorate degree from the Architectural Association in London, Master of Architecture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and B.S. Design from Arizona State University. As an architect, artist, experimental designer, and professor, she shares her diverse background and perspectives as the Head of the Neuroscience for Architecture Program at the NewSchool of Architecture + Design.
Kristine is a registered architect in The Netherlands and currently runs a small practice in Los Angeles. She has previously taught at USC, UMN, AADRL-Architectural Association, Univ. of Brighton, and the Pratt Institute, and has conducted workshops at U-Penn, Berlage (Rotterdam), Ion Mincu (Bucharest), and Tsinghua Univ (Shanghai). She is the recipient of the SOM Research Foundation Prize for Architectural Standards from a Neurological Perspective.

Laura V. Shinn, AIA, AICP, is the Director of Planning at San Diego State University. Ms. Shinn is responsible for campus strategic and master plan management, capital program development, CEQA Actions, facilities planning and design, and facilities data and records oversight, as well as the Facilities Graphics studio and sign shop.
Prior to joining SDSU in December of 2013, Ms. Shinn was a director in the Office of Planning at The Ohio State University. Before Ohio State, Ms. Shinn was the Associate Director of Design at the Columbus Neighborhood Design Assistance Center. She began her career as an architect in private practice specializing in historic preservation and accessible design.
